Feast of St. Claire of Assisi - August 11
Today more than 25,000 people die of hunger everyday
25, 000 namamatay ngayon dahil sa gutom araw-araw
because of an economic system built on greed
dahil sa sistemang ang pundasyon ay ganid
making it possible for a small percent of world’s population to wallow in wealth
while more than 1 billion people forced by necessity in slums.

St. Claire of Assisi experienced that God, not greed, as the only security
Like St. Francis of Assisi, she embraced Lady Poverty
Tulad ni San Francisco niyakap niya si Ginang Karukhaan
She insisted that God provides for her through alms
Not through secure income from properties.
Popes found it hard that such a life could be lived
But Claire claimed that this privilege of poverty is Gospel life.
Finally, Pope Innocent IV approved in writing her radical poverty
Two days before she died Aug. 11, 1253
Dalawang araw bago siya mamatay namatay noong ika-11 taon 1253.
Affirming what was written to Clare and her sisters by Pope Gregory IX in 1228:
“It is evident that the desire of consecrating yourselves to God alone has led you to abandon every wish for temporal things. Wherefore, after having sold all your goods and having distributed them among the poor, you propose to have absolutely no possessions, in order to follow in all things the example of Him Who became poor and Who is the way, the truth, and the life. Neither does the want of necessary things deter you from such a proposal, for the left arm of your Celestial Spouse is beneath your head to sustain the infirmity of your body, which, according to the order of charity, you have subjected to the law of the spirit. Finally, He who feeds the birds of the air and who gives the lilies of the field their raiment and their nourishment, will not leave you in want of clothing or of food until He shall come Himself to minister to you in eternity when, namely, the right hand of His consolations shall embrace you in the plenitude of the Beatific Vision. Since, therefore, you have asked for it, we confirm by Apostolic favour your resolution of the loftiest poverty and by the authority of these present letters grant that you may not be constrained by anyone to receive possessions.”
May St. Claire lead us to experience God’s personal love
To overcome the greed within us and in society,
So that we become simple and poor … to give life to the millions who are poor.
“Placing ourselves side by side with those who are wounded by life is not only a social exercise, but
above all a spiritual act because it is Christ's face that shines in the face of the poor: “Whatever you did
for one of these least brothers of mine, you did for me” (Matthew 25:40).” (Synod of Bishops 2012)
